Nightlife in Santa Fe

Like everything else in Santa Fe, your choices for nightlife are varied.  But of course, they're not the usual kind of choices you'd find in other cities this size.

No, no - we're talking spine-tingling talent and dazzling performance. And much of for very little cost or even FREE!  It may not be New York or Los Angeles, but Santa Fe CAN hold a candle.

Well we couldn't go everywhere, but we try to get around a bit - we actually do this part really well.   Unfortunately we took Stephanie Beninato's Bars and Brothels tour on our last night, so we missed some good places, but we'll know better next time.

Here's where we went and what happened.
Vanessie (free)
434 San Francisco Street
(505) 982-9966

Doug Montgomery at Vanessie, Santa Fe, New Mexico

The ultimate in piano bar.  Doug Montgomery (who we heard) and Charles Tichenor run the  piano show.

This was my favorite, so I had a lot more to say here.

A big fireplace and nice art on the wall make this spacious place cozy for drinks or dinner.

Locals come here and listen, or the bold ones pick up the mic and belt out something.  A friendly venue for new talent to try their wings.

El Dorado Hotel (free)
309 W. San Francisco Street
505-988-4455
El Dorado Hotel, Santa Fe, New Mexico After a nice dinner when you're feeling a little sleepy, this is a wonderful lounge with big cushy chairs and couches to curl up in.

And, yes, I said "free."  Amazing.

Ruben also has a Music Gallery right of The Plaza.

Ruben Romero World Music Gallery
66 East San Francisco Street, Gallery 12-A
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501
Telephone: 505-989-7611

You can  order his albums on Amazon or listen to some clips here (scroll down the page).

On Saturday nights, Ruben Romero, a Santa Fe native, will entertain you with award winning classical and flamenco guitar.

Ruben has won two NAMMY awards; Best Latin Recording and Best World Music Recording.

Don't Spend the Night in Your Room!

Take Stephanie Beninato
Bars & Brothels Tour.

I suggest you take it as soon as you get there so you don't waste a night.

It lasts about an hour and a half and she'll show you places you didn't know existed.

She'll not only tell you where to find the best jazz, piano, blues, rock and roll, but she fill you in on Santa Fe's
 'colorful' past.

And if your visit is on a weeknight or in the off-season (I haven't figured out when that is), she'll show you where to go and have the evening you hoped for.

Stephanie gets out and about; she knows what's happening in her town. It's like going out with a buddy!

Evangelos
200 W San Francisco St
(505) 982-9014

This brought out the 70's in us - no bowls or pipes though.  But it got us dancing - and that's an accomplishment!  The rock and roll band kept things lively and the place was packed - not an uncommon scene.

Evangelos, Santa Fe, New Mexico
Evanglos is probably the last of the old downtown bars in Santa Fe and its claim to fame is a commemorative stamp with the image of a soldier who is none other than Papa Evangelos, the original owner.  Commemorative Stamp, Evangelos, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Evangelos, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Things can get rowdy - even raucous - at Evangelos.  It's not uncommon for a fight to break out or someone to get thrown out on the street.  But no one seems too upset about any of it  - just a day-in-the-life- of Evangelos.  A great time.

La Casa Sena (free)
125 E. Palace
Santa Fe,
(505)988-9232

Where wait staff and talent meet.  First they take your beverage order, scurry around to serve it, then launch into a jazz tune or My Fair Lady or some other Broadway hit.

La Cantina, Santa Fe, New Mexico
This caught our attention.

La Cantina, Santa Fe, New Mexico
Here's talented Ben Callan, the "pockets-on-the-back-of-your-coat" guy, singing 'Bring Him Home' from Les Misérables.  Let me tell you - he can wear his pockets wherever he wants!

La Cantina, Santa Fe, New Mexico
Richard Peters & Stephanie Duran - what a team!

That over, they're back getting your entree order, waiting on other tables, making sure all is OK.
Back on "stage" for a duet, a piano solo, or some funny talk. But now you're ready for your salad, and here it comes. They manage this toggling act until 9 or 10 o'clock.
The singing wait staff is in the La Cantina room, a casual environment.

A more formal dining room, is also available with a more complex menu.

Give me simplicity and a lot of fun any day.  This is a treat and the wine list is great.

In the summer they serve on Sena Plaza, one of the most beautiful and historic spots in Santa Fe - if you like musicals, this is a don't miss.
