la Madeleine
Our New Orleans Coffee House Favorite

Got a question about New Orleans

Je pense gue je pourraise boire du cafe avec toi pour le restant de ma vie...I could have coffee with you for the rest of my life!

It's true, if the coffee and the ambiance are as good as that served in la Madeleine.   It's completely French, and the pastries, baked by French-trained chef's are melt-in-your mouth light.

Coffee in New Orleans, is routinely made just a little differently than in most places.  Unless you specify otherwise, your coffee will be served with chickory which is a root cultivated in France, ground up and added to the coffee to give it a stronger taste.

This coffee-chickory recipe originated when coffee was hard to get and chickory was readily available.  Personally, we find the chickory a bit muddy tasting - purists (?) I guess!

If you ask a local where to go for coffee in the French Quarter, they will most likely direct you to CC's (Community Coffee), which is indeed a good choice, or  Cafe Du Monde' which is the guide book favorite.

CC's, a southern states' chain, has good coffee, a very friendly staff and served us a delicious holiday drink with eggnog and espresso.

The Cafe Du Monde´, one of the oldest coffee houses in New Orleans, sits in the French Market under a huge tent and serves up a production line Cafe Au Lait and Beignets (ben-yahs).  It is a terrific gathering spot early in the morning, especially for tourists, although we hear that locals like to go there too.

Our choice, however, is le Madeleine, which is also a chain, but emits an atmosphere of quaint and local.  On the corner of Jackson Square,  where psychics, tarot readers and artists, are waiting patiently for their day to begin, Madeleine's is buzzing with friendly

morning coffee talk.  Heavy wooden floors are topped with wooden tables scattered around conversationally and two sides of the room are ceiling to floor French Doors.

People watching, business meetings, morning paper, or just a quiet chat with a friend - it would be easy to lose the morning here.

Coffee is help-yourself, the milk is hot in the thermos and refills are free.  If you've a sweet tooth in the morning, you could have the traditional beignet, a fried square of pastry, drowned in powdered sugar, or you could choose from any number of mouth-watering selections of cheesecakes, brulee, napoleons, tarts and more.

But it doesn't end with morning fare.  Soupes, salads, sandwiches, pizza, hot French specialties, dinners and pasta are also served throughout the day.

Quez desirez-vous?  What would you like?  You won't be disappointed.

Having finished our coffee, we head out to visit Tee Eva, The Queen of Pralines!
