Juan's Flying Burrito - Huh?

Got a question about New Orleans
Ask Us

Sometimes being VERY hungry leads to important discoveries.

When we're traveling, we tend to look for something quaint and charming when it comes to dining.  Juan's Flying Burrito was neither.

Although it is located on the chic Magazine Street, it looks like a dive and...well, it kind of is.  But since there was nothing else in sight and we were getting edgy, let's say, the name was intriguing enough to capture our attention.

Acid rock was blaring as we entered and the waitress, with rings in her nose and nearly black lipstick, checked us out with disinterest and shrugged at us to sit... wherever.

She delivered menus and answered our 'stupid' questions about specialty dishes with a suspicious look and said she'd be back when we'd made a decision.

The menu looked surprisingly interesting and sure enough, just as she said, Juan's Super Burrito, wrapped in a spinach tortilla was the posted headliner.  Dub ordered that, because he always orders burritos in a Mexican restaurant, and I tried the pork enchiladas, because I always order enchiladas.  We do this, not because we are in a rut, but because it is the only way we can compare flavor, and do not want to miss the best one ever when it comes along.  Yuh, sure.

While waiting for our meal to arrive, we [pretend to] enjoy the music and notice that the place has a lot of personality.   On our table is a postcard in a stand up frame with a message on the back saying something like "Dear Juan, Managed to avoid the cops one more time.  Having a great time.  Keep making those burritos.  Can't wait to have one when I get back.  Curtis"

So, there really is a Juan.  Our waitress returns with drinks and we ask her what her name is.  "Curry" she says.  Oh, what an unusual name, we say creatively.  Is everyone here named after a spice?  "No," she says, "it's not a spice, it's Kure" and it's her birth name.   She's actually warming up to us now, so we push ahead and ask about the Flying Burrito and Juan.

As it turns out, Juan is a collective; it stands for everybody - everybody that works there, that is.  She doesn't know where the name came from but the cooks are real Mexicans and she promises us the food is the best around and we won't be disappointed.

She's right.  It's one of those meals, you make m-m-m noises and roll your eyes up because it is so good, and yes, I know I said we were really hungry, but this food is genuinely good, and by that, I mean it actually has flavor and is not scraped out of a can and reheated.

When our bill comes, we notice "COPS" is written on the back.  Hoping we aren't suspects (expired drivers license escapees), we ask Kure, what's that about?  She laughs and tells us that all the tables are named in conjunction with the postcards on the table.  Next to us is Dirty Sanchez, behind us is Scream and others are St. Louis, Texas, Mary, Van Halen.  I told you it was an interesting place.

If you get here, try it. We're glad we always order burritos and enchiladas.  We may just have found the best ones.

Juan's Flying Burrito is at 2018 Magazine Street right in the middle of a block of antiques.

Meet us tonight for the Celebration in the Oaks where two million lights will take us back to the magic and fantasy of childhood!  Who can resist that?
