Cindee, our innkeeper, has come to our rescue!
She has offered to drive us to City Park to see the Celebration
in the Oaks which is a 20 minute drive from the Garden
District!
We stop at one of her favorite 'joints' for dinner, Liuzza's,
and have oyster po'boys, the legendary New Orleanean staple.
City Park, located in the section known as Historic New Orleans
Trace, is the fifth largest urban park in the nation!
It
encompasses 1500 acres and boasts grand old oak trees along with
picturesque statues, fountains and historic buildings.
Once a swampy, oak-filled forest and home to Indians, City Park today
is best known for its position as the place for Creole gentlemen to
conduct their "affaires d'honneur", or dueling, which was not
outlawed until 1890.
But at Christmas, City Park is ablaze with more lights than you can
imagine.
Carousels, angels, reindeer, ships and Cajun Santa
in a pirogue drawn by alligators, line a
two mile driving tour which we opt to take. A walking tour
is also available through the Botanical
Gardens, Storyland
and the Amusement Ride Area.
Of course, there's nothing like the real thing, but we've set out to
give you a little preview.
