Any tradition that has lasted - either for real or
by memory - for almost 60 years deserves a look see. The Fairmont Hotel is located
on Baronne Street, just a short walk from our hotel
Back in the 1940's the Fairmont was the Roosevelt Hotel. For
twenty years, the lobby became the pathway to Santa Claus' workshop and
was decorated with a white 'angel hair' canopy from one end to
another. Attached to the canopy were hundreds of twinkling lights,
ornaments and tinsel.
In the 1970's, the hotel changed ownership and for awhile, the
tradition was discontinued, but happily, for those with the magical
childhood memories, the Angel Hair Canopy has been
revived. A dozen or so Christmas trees line the
'pathway', lifesize gingerbread houses are tucked in little alcoves, and
children's choirs sing Christmas carols. The hustle bustle of the
hotel is calmed as people stop to gaze at this fantasy of Christmas. |
