Tiny Bubbles -the
steaming gurgling hot springs of Colorado
There are many, many hot springs in Colorado. You can
buy a book
on the subject if you like.
One of our favorite Colorado hot
springs is the Wiesbaden in Ouray, Colorado. We like
springs with unusual features and avoid those in big public pools
or a 'creepy' ambiance. Ready for
a soak?

| Ouray, Colorado
is a very special place. The town is quaint with Victorian-style
shops, restaurants and bed and breakfasts. It's snuggled in a valley
literally surrounded by peaks that rise 13,000 feet!
For
over 100 years, it has been officially known as America's Little Switzerland,
and there's a big sign saying so when you enter from the South. It's
the kind of town where people say 'hello' when they pass you on the street |
|
|
As soon as we hit Ouray, I am prompted
to shed my mental rat-race attire and go in search of peace and
pampering. The Wiesbaden Hot Mineral Springs is the place,
and since we're here, we might as well spend the night. The
rooms are woodsy and charming and restaurants and bars are within
walking distance.
|
The caves are what make Wiesbaden stand out from other hot
springs. A short walk through the lobby and down the stairs
takes us to the entrance. As we get close, the air begins to
feel moist and warm, but we're unprepared for the thick blast of
wet heat that wraps around us as we pry open the heavy wooden door
and enter the underground spring.

Inside the caves
|
It's
dark, but a soft light casts a glow on the
cave walls and the low, rectangular
pools. A couple of people are
meditating so we ease quietly into the
steaming hot water and feel the tensions of
the day instantly ooze from our bodies. In
a few seconds, we drift off to the place where
tranquility and healing reside in our
minds. A good 30 minutes later we're
feeling like rag dolls.
|
| Climbing
out of the pool is almost more effort than we
can muster, but we manage and drag ourselves
back to our room.
A complete
menu of spa treatments are available including
massage, facials, body rubs and scrubs, waxing
and more. |
|
The newest addition to the facility is the
Lorelie (see
a 360º view),
an outdoor hot springs pool hidden among plenty of green plants and
trees and closed for privacy with a rugged redwood fence. Clothing
is optional and unlike the pools in the caves, the Lorelei requires
reservations. It is a completely private and alluring experience.
For more information visit the Wiesbaden's
website.
