The Gods would be grinning no doubt. After all,
didn't they make artists to manage the magic in our lives?
And so the
story goes...
Early settlers stumbled (so to speak) on this
beautiful patch of red rocks jutting up from the earth. The practical, robust
one in the group commented "Wouldn't this make a great beer
garden?" And the more poetic replied, "This is a place
fit for the Gods."

Balance Rock
Lucky for us the land was purchased in 1879 by
Charles Elliott Perkins who, by profession, was President of a railroad
in Iowa, but by soul, must have been somewhat of an artist
himself. He kept the garden pristine and left a wish that it be
kept forever free of charge to the public. |
|
In 1909, his grandchildren fulfilled his wish and
turned the garden over to the city of Colorado Springs. You can
drive through it, climb the rocks with a permit, picnic, hike, horseback
ride, and take as many pictures as you like.
