Clothes Horsing
Now that you know about the fickle mountain weather patterns, what should you pack?

You were thinking you'd throw a few sweaters, some long underwear, a big coat, gloves, hat and a pair of jeans in you suitcase?  Hmmm.

Have you ever been in cold weather and felt hot and cold, shivery and sweaty all at the same time?  It used to be that was an acceptable trade off for frolicking in the the snow.  And if you got a cold or even the flu, it was just a small price to pay for a few days as icy weather royals.

Today, you don't have to get sick, be uncomfortable or even look like a mammoth teddy bear to enjoy the adventures of mountain country.  The secret is layering and using fabrics that promote your body's ability to regulate itself.

Adam W. Chase describes the three levels of dress for optimum comfort in the Art of Layering.

What to Pack

Go ahead with the sweaters and jeans for nightlife and other indoor activities.

For the outdoor stuff, don't forget your  SUNGLASSES/goggles and SUNSCREEN with plenty of UVR protection.

Here are some leaders who provide the outdoor gear in fabrics that achieve the effects you need to stay healthy and comfortable.

Hot Chilly's
- long underwear or more appropriately, base layer garments.
Very soft against your skin, and moves the
moisture away from your body.

QuickFinger Gloves
- unbelievably unique!  A zipper gives you the freedom to take pictures, grab a dollar, pull up your sock, etc. without removing your glove!

Kombi and Outlast
- gloves and liners.
The idea behind Outlast is that its  materials absorb excess body heat, hold it, and then release it when your body cools.

Nike
- jackets.
Waterproof, breathable with lots of neat features.

North Face/W.L. Gore & Associates
Parkas, gloves, shells.
New, improved version of the famous Gore-Tex, Gore Tex XCR with 50% more breathability.

Patagonia
- variety of gear offered in five weights, R1- R5.
Known for the miracle quality fabric that combines breathability, moisture management and compressibility.

SealSkinz
- waterproof socks.
Waterproof, windproof, and breathable.  Wear with thin layer of good base fabric to eliminate the rubbery feeling.

Smartwool
- socks, t-shirts, underwear.  Absorbs moisture, washable and not scratchy!

Base layer  - ideally, a base layer should help you maintain a warm or cool enough temperature so that you are neither shivering nor sweating.

The idea is to wear clothes that draw moisture away from you skin so that it can evaporate through other layers.

Second layer - known as either the mid layer or the performance layer, the second layer is a continuation of the base layer in managing moisture, but it also provides thermal insulation.

Outer layer - the final or shell layer serves to resist or block the elements -- such as wind, rain, or snow -- so that you remain warm and dry.

Your objective is to keep from getting too cold, or too hot and dehydrated, and to stay dry and warm while being able to perform easily in all types of weather and your choice of outdoor activities.

On to Airless Cooking.  After all, eating is half the fun of a vacation.  Don't let the altitude flatten your fun.
