 International Breckenridge Snow Sculpture Championships!
It's So Cool!

More about Breckenridge

When I was a kid, my sister and I thought we were artists of the uumph degree when we carved out an igloo in the snow, poked little holes around the edge so our cat could climb in and out and laid sticks on the floor to keep our tushes from freezing.

We didn't win any prizes, but we had a great time and all our friends were jealous.  Life was so simple then.

Making Snow and filling the Mold

The Riverwalk is buzzing with activity. Blocks of snow are being readied for the artists to begin sculpting their frozen creations for competition in the annual International Snow Sculpture Championships.

First a wooden mold is built.  Next machine-made snow is gathered up and blown into the top of the mold.  "Snow stompers" jump on the snow after each truckload until it is packed firmly before the wooden mold is removed.

Four giant blocks are ready in minutes, looking clean and sparkling in the sun.  Fifteen blocks will be completed before the day is over.  Each block measures 10x10x12 and weighs 20 tons!

Preparations for the contest begin in the summer when hundreds of invitations are sent to artists worldwide.  After submitting sketches of their proposed snow sculpture, a selection committee chooses 15 of the best.  It's a tough call, because they are all good.

Over the next five days, 15 teams will create stunningly diverse creations.  They have arrived from Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, and the USA.

This is the 11th annual Championships.  It attracts thousands of spectators from all over the world.  Breckenridge - the friendly town - can handle it.

In the next few days, we'll be watching the artists as they progress on their masterpieces.

The blocks are beginning to take shape. Ladders, scaffolds and fences adorn the circumference of the developing images.  Artists look tense and focused.  They are at the mercy of their own ingenuity.  No power tools or any sort of modern material may used to enhance their project.

Chisels, saws, chicken wire and sometime kitchen utensils may be used, but you have to wonder what good those will do on a monument this size!

International Snow Sculpture - Breckenridge, Colorado     International Snow Sculpture - Breckenridge, Colorado Tomorrow is judgment day!  Will anyone sleep tonight?  The reward is nothing more than acknowledgement of a superior job - no cash, no vacations - just pride in accomplishment, new friends and the chance to create freely.  What more could an artist ask for?

Tomorrow, we'll come back and celebrate the winning sculpture.
