Another glorious
day! Our spirits are high as we head towards Tiburon
— just a few miles south of San Rafael — where we’ll have
breakfast and see the town before taking the ferry over to Angel Island.
Downtown Tiburon,
tucked on the pier at the end of Tiburon Blvd — even with tourists — looks laid back and upscale. Lush,
but nicely manicured, Tiburon‘s quaint, chic look is inviting; parking
is easy to find and the air is salty and fresh.

PATIO
ALERT!

|
Our pick for breakfast is Sam’s Anchor
Café,
a popular spot for tourists and locals.
|
 |
|
It’s been a restaurant since 1920, longer than any other in
Tiburon. |
In the early days -
during prohibition - there were a few secret items (spirits served
from bottles!) on the menu. And "secretly", Sam’s was a
fully operational saloon! Evidence is hidden beneath the now-remodeled floor — a trap
door, leading to the dock where boats arrived to sneak in the whiskey!
A huge outdoor deck on the harbor is
the favorite meeting place on a day like today, and we are early
enough to get a table without a wait.
The sun feels good as we begin to wake up with orange juice and
delicious gourmet coffee.
She says just getting away for a few days makes her happy.
His answer is more romantic.
"It’s the person
I’m with," he says. "If you
are with the right person and can share the experience, the trip is so
much more meaningful."
She is looking at him
suspiciously, as though he is a complete stranger — hmmm. As we leave Sam’s, Dub spots a
Hawaiian shirt in a shop across the street. For someone who doesn't own a tie and buys 9 tropical
shirts for every 1 "other" kind, he can't pass up the
opportunity.
