floating home pictures After
World War II, Sausalito moved into its Golden Age, which lasted for 20
years. Artists, writers and intellectuals moved into the houseboats
and deserted barges, creating a "high class bohemian" aura
that gave Sausalito a reputation for being an art colony and literary enclave.
We
are beginning to understand the character of Sausalito is more than
beautiful views and good people-watching. The artistic, creative
flow of the community surfaces. No wonder the largest fine arts
show in the country is held here.
Today, houseboat living
(or Arks, as they call them) is considered quixotic and
stylish.
|
Those
who live in Arks, - Sea Sprites or Sea Squirts if you're a
kid - enjoy a miraculous blend of nature and urban
amenities. |
|
Most are professionals,
commuting to jobs by ferry,
car, bike, boat or even on foot. Others are writers and artists
who have studios on board.
|
Don't
think this is rough living. Some of these boats are 4000 square
feet and have every luxury you can imagine.
Being
slightly Bohemian ourselves, we feel right at home in this unusual
lifestyle. We make a mental note to rent a houseboat on our next
trip to this area.
For now, it's lunch time.
We look for signs of a something interesting and are attracted to a
long line of mesmerized people looking in a window.
