Eventually, the landscape against the lovely Sir Francis Drake Blvd. begins to turn brown and the fragrance of dill turns bovine.

We’ve arrive in Point Reyes Station, a town surrounded on all sides by pastures filled with beef cattle, horses and dairy cows.   Cows seem to be the focal point.  Right downtown there’s Bovine Bakery bragging about their goodies as Udderly Divine.

No BARKING?
Point Reyes is a town with a sense of humor.

The town merchants decided long ago to drop plans for a noon whistle and replace it with a noon ‘moo’.
The moo, which was recorded by filmmaker George Lucas’ studio in neighboring Nicasio, can be heard at noon and 6 p.m.  We don’t want to miss this!
It’s 11:30 — just half an hour until the Big Moo.   Let’s check out the town while we wait.  We’ve got three blocks to browse and maybe there’s something around the corner.
The street looks laid back but the shops feel energetic.   We can tell immediately that we’ll find something unusual here.

Zuma

I find my pick for the day in Zuma, a little shop with "Select Crafts & Ethnic Arts."  It’s a bowl made from papaya!

The papaya is sliced very thin, dried and glued into a delicate pastel bowl.  Lovely.  Others are made of squash, onions, bell peppers and other vegetables and fruits.

There are a lot of shops for such a little town.  Susan Hayes specializes in hand woven clothing and accessories in chenilles and silk blends.  You can sample her things on her website and if you like them, she has a list of stores where her designs are sold.

Thrift shops are always fun.  West Marin’s Community Thrift Store has clothing, toys, household items, jewelry and a special deal which lets you name your own price!

You can get a sarong from Bali at Flower Power, French linens at Xing, beach supplies at the Building Center or local arts and crafts at Toby’s Feed Barn.

It’s 12:00 — time for the moo. And there it is.  Wow, it really is a moo!  And loud too.  What fun.

PATIO ALERT!
