Veneers A veneer is a cap covering the front or face of a tooth.  The veneer requires lab work as does the crown.  Angels Touch Dental Clinic in Los Cabos Baja California uses traditional porcelain veneers as they last 10 years or longer and being without a metal base - are translucent and cosmetically slightly more aesthetic. Veneers are a great solution for chipped, heavily stained teeth that are healthy.  Veneers are also often a good alternative to a long term orthodontic treatment program (i.e. a year or two wearing braces).  Slightly crooked, off-center or rotated teeth can often be made cosmetically perfect using veneers (or crowns).

Most patients when deciding on a crown go for the porcelain fused over a metal base as this is very strong.  Especially for crowns on molars or front incisors that take the most pressure or wear.  For slightly more money, one can choose 100% porcelain crowns.  These again are more translucent than porcelain over metal.  Gold crowns are even more expensive and are mainly a fashion item. 

 Another less expensive solution to veneers (and sometimes crowns) is bonding.

Bonding is a special filling material combining zirconia crystals and resins which like crowns and veneers can also approximate natural tooth coloration.  Bondings are not as permanent or long lasting as a crown or porcelain veneer but the cost at $250usd vs. $450 per tooth for a crown or veneer (Prices in Mex. 2006) – is something to consider. 

The procedure for doing a bonding is similar to that of doing a large filling and can be done in the office without requiring any outside lab work or expense.  This saves the patient days of lab time and a second visit to the clinic for fitting the crowns.  And the tooth preparation process is less invasive than for a crown or veneer.  One visit and you’re off to the beach.
