Los Barriles on the East Cape of the Baja, Mexico

The fishing capital!
Leaving Todos Santos, we drive through desert terrain to the fork in the road that points north to LaPaz or south to Cabos San Lucas.

We head south toward Los Barriles, Mexico, and follow the narrow, curving highway surrounded now by lush green mountains.   Our next stop is Buena Vista and the trip should take about 2 hours.

As we round the last bend  in the road, we are waved down by an 'Officio".  If we had planned it, we couldn't have timed it any better.  The second rider in the  Score International Race is just minutes away!

What looks like the entire population of the nearby town has been waiting hours for this event.  Campers and pick ups with tailgate meals and lawn chairs line the dirt road where the riders will pass.

We have just enough time to pull over, and get the camera ready before the number 2 motorcycle comes roaring through the back road.  The cheering is deafening.

In a flash, he is gone and everyone goes back to their leisurely position to discuss the excitement for awhile more.

Palmas de Cortes

Continuing on, we head into the little community of Los Barriles Mexico.  It is the premier fishing spot in the entire Baja.

Luxurious homes line the beach, many of them owned by Americans.  Other regulars camp out in trailer parks for six months at a time.  Fishing charters, pangas and motorboats produce a level of activity not found in other small towns.

Elegant and comfortable resorts are plentiful in the area.  The Hotel Palmas de Cortes offers the convenience of fishing charters just steps from your room.

Gene's house portraits Our destination is a little farther down the road in  the sleepy neighboring town of Buena Vista, where we've made arrangements to spend the night a few yards from the beach in an unusual and dramatic setting.
Gene's house portraits We meet our friend Gene,  in his intriguing home adorned with portraits of Medusa, Mexican political figures, Gene himself, his mother and other meaningful figures.

See Medusa in the center. Gene is on his right, and Gene's mother is the one framed in blue.

Gene tells us the story of the visiting artist with whom he pondered how Medusa would look on the entrance to his abode. Medusa ranked well, so another was added, then another and...

That was five years ago, and the artist now has so much work, he has never gone home.

In the Baja, it isn't hard to find Americans who have made permanent moves from fast paced, hectic lifestyles to the 'Baja way'   or 'at ease' – at least comparatively.  Gene is one of those people.

His wit and curiosity make him a fascinating companion.   Always exploring in mind and in spirit, his stories and projects keep us captivated for hours.

One of those projects turns out to be our next adventure.
