The Loofah Plant or...

The Mysterious Creeping Vine
The next morning, as we are basking outside our yurt in the warm morning sun, we notice a vine wrapping its way around the circular walls.
At first it seems ornamental with pretty yellow flowers mixed against yellowish green leaves

Looking more closely, we notice long, almost invisible pods growing frequently along the delicate stem of the vine.  At first, we think they must be some form of fruit or vegetable.

We notice that some have fallen to the ground. Touching one, we find it is as light as a feather and the hard brown outer casing cracks easily.  Something inside is loose and rattles a pebbly beat when we shake it.

They are loofahs!
Bet you thought they grew like a sponge in the ocean!

When Gene arrives, we ask him what they are.  Do you know?  Blow up the picture and look closely.

If you would like to grow some of your own, send your address and we'll send you some seeds!

After spending a few hours enjoying our yurt, the beach and the hot water, we decide to visit the biggest living reef on the west coast of North America.  Back to La Ribera and south to Cabo Pulmo.

It is so deserted, that we wonder if we have missed the turnoff.  Most of the road is paved, but a rough five miles on a rugged dirt road slows us to a snail's pace.

Cabo Pulmo is a diving and snorkeling community and is a protected marine sanctuary.  We have our snorkeling equipment, but the winds are fierce, so there will be no water sports today, which is disappointing because the reef is a unique phenomenon in the Sea of Cortez and is know for extraordinarily colorful fish.

Instead we spend the afternoon getting to know the little (very little) town, which is growing, but has two dive shops, the Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort, several restaurants, including Nancy's which has had reviews from The New York Times and Bon Apetit Magazine (maybe not too surprising, since Nancy is a former marketing person from Chicago)!

Eco tours by kayak, hiking and big game fishing are other options. And if you don't have your own equipment, you can rent it.

Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort.  A nice path to walk to your bungalow!

Nancy's Palapa Restaurant serves a blend of Mexican and farm style cooking.  A note on the table announces "Cooking Classes begin at 9:30 a.m."

Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort

Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort has all kinds of lodging options.  This Palapo style 'bungalow' is luxurious and right on the beach with a fabulous view of the ocean.

The road back is just has desolate and bumpy as it was coming!  We stop off along the way to see the developments springing up along the coast.  Hard to imagine that someday soon, this remote and delicious hidden paradise may be teeming with tourists and property management companies, but they signs are showing.

It's close to dinner.  Our goat awaits.
