In Mexico, Things May Surprise You

The Walks of Todos Santos Mexico
By now we are beginning to feel the richness in the underpinnings of Todos Santos and appreciate that in Mexico, things may surprise you where you least expect it.
The writers and artists, the dancers, gourmet cooks and innkeepers all seem to reflect something deep within the fabric of the village.

Perhaps some invisible force attracts and nourishes those who allow it.  We decide to go deeper.

Beach at Todos Santos
Aware now of the invisible energy that sustains this quiet little town, it seems that walking is by far the most satisfying way to experience and discover the secrets.

The ocean is the obvious direction to go, and when we arrive, we wonder why this unbelievably beautiful beach is void of hotels and condominiums; why no one is sunbathing or playing in the waves.

The answer comes swiftly.  Like children, we innocently run for a game in the surf.

Beach at Todos Santos

Immediately we are engulfed with the wrath of the ocean as the current, washing heavily over our feet, begins to forcefully tug us inward.

Waves at Todos Santos

The ocean is in charge here and we back away respectfully.

Beached fishing boats at Todos Santos
Playa Punta Lobos

Even here, at Playa Punta Lobos, where the local fisherman launch their pangas everyday, the waves are unrelenting.  The fishermen have learned to play, however.  They sit in wait until the waves carry them safely onto shore.

There are other walks here, ready to welcome happy wanderers.  Here are some examples of what to enjoy.

Walk to San Juan - stunning view of the town and valley.  Start at the Mission of Santa Rosa de las Palmas, then up the hill.

Cane Mill Circuit - 19th century houses with windows on all sides to catch the summer breezes, avocado and mango orchards, an adobe ruins melted from the rains.  See old sugar cane mills and imagine the days when sugar cane processing was done 7 days a week.

La Cachora Beach -  secluded beach, great place to watch the sunset, but watch out for the surf.

Punta Lobos Beach - nearby lighthouse

Birdsong Walk - a clear, constant melodious symphony of woodpeckers, orioles, quail, mourning doves and others.  Other delights include mango, palm and mesquite trees, chili fields, an occasional burro and egrets.    Go early in the morning.

Returning to town, we see a small but excited group gathered where the main street meets the highway.  As they peer expectantly up the street, a helicopter passes overhead and they all cheer!  That means, we learn, that the first rider in the  Score International Race is about to appear.  How can we be so lucky!

The race, held annually, attracts drivers from all over the world in all kinds of vehicles including motorcycles, pickups, two-wheel drives, stock cars and many more.   Driving the length of the Baja – about 1,000 miles – stops are only allowed for refueling and changing drivers.  This race began at 6 a.m. yesterday, and we are going to witness the winner!

Within minutes, 1XFX slams around the corner,  slowing briefly to be acknowledged by the scoring booth.

Cameras are clicking, and in an instant, he is gone!  In an hour, he will reach Cabo San Lucas and the race will be over for him.

It is hours before the next rider shows up, but the feat is recorded in hundreds of photos.
