Cabo San Lucas Charter Fishing
by Janet James

How to Go Charter Fishing
Doomed is the fish that makes it's way to Cabo San Lucas.  Or maybe not...

Los Cabos is widely known as the The Largest Fishtrap in the World.    It's also known as the Marlin Capital.  More Marlin are caught here than anywhere in the world!

All along the coastline in the Sea of Cortez, are fishing resorts.  Some of the best fishing is  North of Cabo San Lucas in the fishing village of Los Barriles, but there's good fishing in Cabo San Lucas if you don't want to venture further North.

Today, we wander down to the Harbor in Cabo San Lucas around 2:00 p.m. when the fishing charters begin to return for the day.  Anticipation is the tone radiating from the small crowd gathered to witness the results.

The guarantee to a good fishing trip, we hear, is to be cautious when chartering your boat.

How To Charter a Boat
You can reserve ahead, but there is usually not a problem getting a trip spontaneously.  One way to make sure the fleet you charter is reputable is to hang out at the dock in the afternoon, around 3, and ask others how their trip was.

You'll want to hear things like "The crew was great," "Clean boat", "Bathroom works."

Try to find one that's been around for awhile and operated by it's owner.  Most charters have options for all budgets.  Some are clearly more luxurious than others with better equipment and more amenities.

Most of the established charters will provide drinks, insurance, live bait, tackle and gear, a Mexican fishing license, a reliable captain and and plenty of ice.

If you do everything 'right', you have a pretty good chance of catching something.

Vendors will be offering you "can't refuse" deals.  I'm not saying they aren't, just be sure you know what the final cost is and compare the price and what's included with what you get with other companies.

We have our own Fish Story, however, and we didn't follow any of these rules!

Try your luck with your buds in the Bisbee Fishing Tournament held every year in Cabo San Lucas.

Tricia Yulich of Salinas, CA caught this 140 lb striped Marlin after a day of fishing with 24 of her closest friends.  They pooled their money and gambled on who could get the biggest fish.

Tricia won $1000!

When it comes to Marlins, as a general rule, you only get to keep the first one you catch.  It's not a law; its a known

Catch and release are the keywords.  It's generally accepted that you can keep your first catch how else would anyone believe that you caught that 150 lb. trophy?

But sport fishing reigns and there are plenty of other fish you can catch and cook - Dorado (mahi mahi), Yellow Fin Tuna, Roosterfish, Sailfish, Shark and Wahoo - depending on the season just to mention a few.

Save the Marlin; it's that simple.

After it's over, crews will clean, slice bag, and ship your fish for you if you like.  Or the fleet office will make arrangements for you..

It's kind of sad to watch the doomed fish being cut up like that.  It's little eyes staring at you saying "Why me?"  Oh, sorry.

They taste incredible.  See our fish story for cooking ideas.

A few suggestions that we definitely recommend you consider.  Don't have too good a time the night before and if you're even the least prone to seasickness, take some Dramamine.   Bring lip balm, hats, cameras and comfy clothes.

Also remember that the sun is extra intense in the Marlin Capital, so use good sunscreen.  The fishermen's' favorite sunscreen product?  Caribbean Pacific from Orlando, Florida (phone 1-800-432-6723,mailing address 5422 Carrier Drive, Ste. 309, Orlando FL or available at some of Cabo's resorts.
