In Search of Margarita Grande

If you'd like MY secret recipe, you can Contact Me and I'll send it  right
off to you. MMMM good.

Our intentions to find the best margarita recipe are to hit every bar (exaggerating, of course) in Cabo and have a little shot of Margarita.

We figure if they're anything like the ones we get at home, they're mostly mix, with a little glance at the Tequila bottle.  WRONG.

Since we're on the beach, having just gotten off the water taxi and feeling thirsty, we head for The Office, known as 'the happiest place under the sun", a real beach bar with chairs and tables under big blue umbrellas sitting right in the sand.

If this isn't vacation, I don't know what is.  The Sea of Cortez, clear and green, just a few feet away, soft sand under our feet, warm sunshine on our backs, waiters and waitresses buzzing around to meet our whims (drink whims) and sunbathers everywhere.

We've seen The Office written up several times, always claiming to have the best Margarita in Cabo, although I also know that Panchos has the largest selection of tequila anywhere, so why don't they have the best Margarita?  Panchos, by the way, will buy you dinner if you bring in an unopened bottle of Tequila that they do not have in their inventory!

A typical Plain Jane waitress at The Office.

My heart went out to her.

We begin our research project by ordering the standard Margarita.  It arrives in a huge glass, rimmed with salt and frosty frozen.  The first sip tastes and feels like ice crystals, but, make no mistake, it is not ice.

The Mexicans are very proud of their Tequila and will tell you that the best is made from the blue agave.  There are over 90,000 acres of blue agave being harvested in Mexico; most of it in the town of Tequila  - go figure.

Margarita's are best made with tequila blanca (white), but, honestly, after a couple of sips, I don't really think it matters what color it is.

The Essence of Mexico

Cabo's public beaches are well populated with beach vendors.  They are 'not allowed' to cross 'the line' and sell to patrons in eating and drinking establishments.

'Officios' are stationed at regular intervals to see that they don't.  However, I notice that they are either asleep on the job or. . .

A step beyond the Grand Hover

Well, anyway, while we're working on our study, the vendors have spotted us as newcomers and begin The Grand Hover.  How this works is that they stand on the very edge of 'the line' and try to catch your eye.  They flip open cases filled with silver and turquoise jewelry, wave colorful dresses and beach cover-ups, and pass baskets, painted plates,  and a host of other things until you have to look.

Once you look, they zero in with the spiel.  "You not have big ass" this one tells me.  "This dress look good on you."  I'm flattered of course - great Margarita, by the way - and have to see the dress.

me2.jpg (18366 bytes) Twenty minutes later, I've almost finished my drink, seen 200 colorful beach cover-ups, 400 dresses and 7000 hats.  It's all too much.  My defenses are down, I choose a dress, but I still have my wits about me.  Part of the game is the barter.

"How much," I ask one last time - ha.  "Two hundred pesos," he says.  I laugh after calculating a loose $20.  The dress is flimsy and 'barely there'.

"How about seven dollars?"

"You need three?" he says. "I'll give you three for $40 American dollars.  It's a very good deal."

I spot a wrap around beach skirt that would look good on my granddaughter and make my final offer. "The dress and beach skirt for $15."  He can see I'm tough, so he nods, grins, and turns over the merchandise.

Our second Margarita arrived somewhere during the process - the ugly waitress must have worked her magic while I wasn't looking - and we're now pretty much lying on the chairs.  Our study is complete.  This is, without a doubt, the best Margarita in Cabo.
